Coffee Chat with Tom Scheibelhut

Tom was employee #3 at CEM, joining the company at inception. He shares his thoughts on CEM's evolution and its future.

We’re celebrating CEM’s thirtieth birthday this month. You’ve been at CEM since day one (and are employee number one). How has CEM evolved since joining the firm?

  • It’s more that CEM has evolved from a one-person shop in an attic to now a 40+ person firm with multiple benchmarking services and global offices. We have grown from one core benchmarking subscription to five (IBS, DC, PABS, Global Leaders, Transparency Benchmarking) plus we now have custom research. I’m thrilled to have passed the baton to Rashay for the next chapter and can’t wait to see how we continue to grow our people and our offerings.

What’s in store for the next 30 years at CEM?

  • I’m really excited to have Rashay here to lead CEM. Since he joined last year, we have undertaken some great projects and new innovations for our subscriptions and services. As for the next 30 years, I expect CEM to continue to grow and help change the world for the better!

What has been your best memory from a CEM event or conference?

  • I have loved all of our client conferences. In particular, the pension administration conferences are very special given the community. Administrators love to share and help others and it is reflective in the conversations and experiences we have fostered at the conferences. As for my favourite memory, I’d have to say dinner on the aircraft carrier in New York City was pretty cool.

This past summer you worked remotely from your holiday home in Nova Scotia. How did you spend your time out East?

  • The highlight for me was the early mornings with just me and my granddaughter. I have been a swimmer all my life and I also really enjoyed swimming around a nearby lake with my wife, Christie, and other visiting family members.

How do you see yourself in retirement?

  • Too early to even think about it! My commitment now is continuing to work at CEM in my new capacity. Retirement awaits.
